Environmental Health Officer (Food Safety & Health & Safety)

Location: Barnet (Hybrid Working)

Salary: £42,771 – £46,968

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Environmental Health Officer to join our Environmental Health team. This role is key to protecting and improving the health, safety, and wellbeing of residents, workers, and visitors across the borough. The successful candidate will lead on complex Health and Safety investigations and deliver a comprehensive Food Safety inspection programme, ensuring compliance with legislation and maintaining high professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct food safety and hygiene inspections across a variety of premises
• Lead and manage complex health and safety investigations and incidents
• Enforce legislation using the full range of statutory powers
• Investigate food complaints, infectious diseases, and public health risks
• Inspect premises in relation to pests, drainage, refuse, and associated issues
• Prepare legal case files, serve notices, and represent the Council in legal proceedings where required
• Provide professional advice and guidance to businesses, schools, and stakeholders
• Liaise with key partners including the Food Standards Agency and the Health and Safety Executive
• Support outbreak investigations and multi-agency working
• Contribute to service improvement, policy development, and training initiatives

You will be a qualified and experienced professional with:

• A recognised qualification in Environmental Health or equivalent
• Experience in food safety enforcement and health and safety regulation
• Strong knowledge of relevant UK legislation and enforcement practices
• Experience managing complex investigations and preparing legal cases
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a hybrid working environment
