Environmental Health Officer – Private Sector Housing

Location: East Suffolk

Duration: 8–16 weeks

Rate: Flexible – please include candidate pay expectations when submitting.

We are currently working to recruit an experienced Environmental Health Officer / Private Sector Housing Officer to support its Private Sector Housing team on an interim basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced housing professional to support the delivery of housing standards, property inspections and enforcement activity across East Suffolk and West Suffolk.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out inspections of privately rented residential properties across East Suffolk and West Suffolk.
• Investigate housing complaints and identify hazards using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
• Liaise with tenants, landlords, managing agents and other relevant stakeholders.
• Arrange and undertake property visits and inspections.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports and enforcement documentation.
• Serve statutory notices where required and progress enforcement action.
• Support housing standards enforcement, including cases that may result in civil penalties.
• Apply current housing legislation and ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.
• Work across Private Sector Housing matters, including HHSRS, Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector and forthcoming Renters’ Rights legislation and associated housing reforms.

Essential Requirements

• Previous experience working within a Local Authority Private Sector Housing team.
• Strong knowledge of HHSRS and housing enforcement legislation.
• Proven experience undertaking property inspections and preparing enforcement documentation.
• Experience preparing statutory notices and managing enforcement cases through to resolution.
• Sound understanding of housing hazards, enforcement processes and relevant legislation.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Location and Working Arrangements

Inspections will be carried out across East Suffolk and West Suffolk, so good local geographical knowledge would be advantageous.
